About Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are non-surgical, minimally invasive injectable treatments that are designed to restore facial volume and address visible signs of aging, such as wrinkles and volume loss. Fillers are measured in syringes or cubic centimeters (cc) and are often provided in 0.5 cc or 1 cc syringes. Many fillers are graded based on their viscosity, often referred to as “G” or “G-prime,” with the higher the G, the more viscous or rigid the filler. (1) Our practice offers a variety of formulas, including hyaluronic acid fillers, calcium hydroxylapatite fillers, and poly-L-lactic acid fillers, to help patients address each of their concerns.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that can be naturally found in the body. Hyaluronic acid is known to attract and retain moisture, and is often used in aesthetics to restore and enhance volume in the lips, cheeks, and nasolabial folds. (2)

Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA)

Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) is a biocompatible compound that provides volume and can stimulate collagen synthesis. (3) CaHA-based fillers are often used to enhance deeper lines in areas such as the cheeks, hands, or jawline.

Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA)

Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) is a synthetic, absorbable substance that can restore volume and stimulate the production of collagen. (4) Unlike other fillers, PLLA gradually enhances each patient’s facial volume rather than providing immediate volume. PLLA fillers are highly recommended for patients interested in addressing hollowing and volume loss.

Ideal Candidates

Suitable candidates for dermal fillers include individuals interested in reducing visible signs of aging, as well as restoring lost volume, in the face, neck, or hands. Patients experiencing a loss of volume or fullness in the temples or cheeks may be recommended for this treatment, as well as individuals interested in augmenting the appearance of their chin or lips. Those interested in minimizing or softening the appearance of their lines and wrinkles may also find this treatment highly beneficial. All candidates interested in dermal fillers should be in good overall health, with realistic expectations as to what this procedure can accomplish. Our expert injector will determine each patient’s candidacy for dermal fillers during their personal consultation.

Preparation

While preparation is fairly minimal, patients should still follow any instructions provided to them by their injector for the best possible outcome. Harsh skincare products, such as retinoids, exfoliants, or peels, should be avoided several days before the appointment, and the treatment area should be kept moisturized and hydrated. The consumption of alcohol or nicotine products should be avoided several days before each treatment to help minimize swelling. On the day of the appointment, each patient should arrive with a clean face, free from any makeup or skincare products.

Juvederm Vollure XC is formulated with unique Vycross technology to create a smoother, more flexible filler. This formula is used to fill in more moderate to severe lines, wrinkles, and folds to restore a youthful-looking facial contour. Radiesse can be used to help address concerns in the jawline, hands, and lower face.

Restylane

Restylane is a collection of different hyaluronic acid gel-based fillers, designed to act like the naturally occurring hyaluronic acid inside each patient’s body. Restylane can help fill in lines, wrinkles, and folds that naturally occur in various areas of the body as patients age, and can even fill in scars to restore the smoothness of the skin. We offer Restylane Lyft, Restylane Refyne, Restylane Defyne, and Restylane Silk to help each patient restore their natural fullness.

Restylane Lyft

Restylane Lyft is a dissolvable filler designed to restore fullness and structure in the hands or cheeks. Restylane Defyne is formulated to add volume, as well as smooth and fill lines, without limiting each patient’s ability to make their natural facial expressions.

Restylane Silk

Restylane Silk is the softest and smoothest filler in the Restylane collection, designed to augment the lips and fill in vertical lip lines. This filler is known for its subtle enhancements and is ideal for more precise detail.

Sculptra

Sculptra is a biodegradable filler derived from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and is FDA-approved to restore fullness in the face. This filler is known for its collagen-stimulating properties, resulting in more natural-looking enhancements and improved skin quality. Sculptra offers gradual results, meaning that patients will continue to see the effects of Sculptra develop over time.

Recovery and Results

After receiving their injections, each patient is welcome to return to their daily routine, but should avoid physical activity for at least 24 hours. Minor redness or swelling may be experienced at the injection sites, but these effects are temporary and typically subside within days.

Depending on the type of filler used, patients may either experience immediate results or a gradual improvement. Patients can enjoy a more youthful-looking aesthetic and restored fullness, with many patients reporting an improvement in their self-esteem. Patients who received collagen-stimulating fillers will also notice a continuous improvement in the texture, tone, and overall quality of their skin. The results of fillers can range in longevity, with patients experiencing results lasting between 6 months to 2 years.
