How Effective Is a Butt Lift?

After weight loss, toning the buttocks with exercises can be a time-consuming process that doesn’t always pay off. However, when you visit Eric P. Bachelor, M.D. at East Bay Aesthetic Surgery in Pleasanton, CA, you can explore different cosmetic surgery options that can help you achieve your desired body goals. A butt lift can be an excellent option if you want to lift the buttocks or contour the shape of the buttocks.

Effectiveness

A butt lift is a very effective procedure. This surgery works by removing excess loose skin on the buttocks and augmenting the shape of the buttocks by removing some excess fat. Some of the benefits of this procedure include smoothing the appearance of cellulite, emphasizing the shape of the butt, and balancing the proportions of the body. A lift procedure for the buttocks can make your skin appear much more smooth and firm.

However, a traditional lift procedure for the buttocks is not designed to increase butt volume. If you want to simultaneously trim and tone the butt, you may want to consider a BBL procedure instead. Please discuss all of your treatment goals with Dr. Bachelor during your consultation so the results of your surgery can meet all of your expectations.

Steps

A lift for the butt is typically a two-part procedure. First, liposuction will remove unwanted fat from the buttocks. For this surgery, it’s not uncommon for butt liposuction to be combined with liposuction for other areas of the body, such as the thighs or the abdomen. After liposuction, your surgeon will lift and tighten skin tissues so the shape of the buttocks is rounder and elevated.

Expectations

This procedure is performed under general anesthesia, so your heart and lungs must be healthy enough to withstand the sedative. Your surgery will take place at a hospital, and you may need to stay overnight during your initial recovery. You will not be able to drive yourself home, so it’s best to arrange for transportation the following morning.

This procedure takes a few hours to complete. Your surgeon will focus on lifting loose skin from the lower back to contour the buttocks and upper thigh areas. Depending on your goals, liposuction can be used to contour your buttocks. The incisions for this surgery are closed with dissolvable sutures. You will need to attend a follow-up appointment about two to four weeks after your procedure.

Recovery

Your initial recovery period will take about two to four weeks. You will have extensive restrictions during this time, such as instructions on how to take care of your incisions. You may have surgical drains that must be emptied daily before the drains can be removed by your surgeon. Your activities will be limited during your initial recovery, so you should plan to take several days off work.

During the first one to two weeks after your surgery, you will not be able to sit for prolonged periods unless you are using the toilet. When you are resting, you should lie down on your stomach or your side to avoid putting pressure on your healing tissues. After at least two weeks, you can sit on your hamstrings with a soft pillow or a donut pillow. Direct pressure on the buttocks must be avoided for at least eight weeks.

Compression Garments

After your procedure, you will be directed to wear compression garments on the buttocks to keep the area compressed. Not only do compression garments help reduce swelling, but these tight-fitting clothes can also ensure your buttocks heal in the desired shape. You will likely need to wear compression garments for six to eight weeks, so buying multiple garments is recommended. These garments will need to be worn all day, every day.

Results

While the initial recovery period for this procedure is two to four weeks, it may take several months for your body to fully recover from the surgery. For many people, the final results will only be visible after at least three to six months. You may notice a definite change in the position of your buttocks immediately after your procedure, especially if liposuction was used to remove unwanted fat from the area.

How Long Will Results Last?

The results of this procedure can last a lifetime if you do not gain excessive weight in the future. To maintain your results for as long as possible, you should exercise regularly and focus on toning the muscles in your buttocks. Physical fitness can keep your skin tighter for longer, which means it will take several years for the natural aging process to catch up to you as long as you stay moderately active.

Ideal Candidate

Candidates for a lift procedure can only be determined after attending a detailed consultation. The consultation is an essential step since this appointment allows you to discuss your aesthetic goals with your surgeon, as well as provide medical information that may be relevant to your eligibility for the surgery. Candidates for this procedure include men and women who are:

  • Not obese
  • Not smokers
  • Not diabetic

You may not be an ideal candidate if you cannot quit smoking for at least six weeks before the surgery, or if you have unrealistic expectations for what the surgery can accomplish. If you have recently lost a lot of weight but have not reached a stable weight that you can maintain for at least three to six months, you may not be eligible for this procedure.
